Biodiversity in Turkey

With a privileged position between two continents, located in three biogeographical regions (Iran-Turan, Mediterranean and Europe-Siberia) and in two of the major global flyways for migratory birds, Turkey has a rich biodiversity and an extraordinary ecosystem diversity.

Identified number of vascular plants in Turkey has reached to 11.000 as species and sub-specie taxon. This number increases day by day with the identification of new species. Turkey indicates continental properties in terms of vascular plant diversity. Total number of species is approximately 12.500 in whole Europe. And more than 19.000 invertebrate species and 1.500 vertebrate species occur in Turkey.

The implementation of Natura 2000, a network of protected areas aimed to show that it is possible to increase wealth and welfare without losing our natural treasures, means a great opportunity for Turkey.
